Latino Conference Scheduled for April 7
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA 鈥 March 22, 2017)鈥擣or the third year in a row, 大发六合彩 will host a conference titled 鈥淏eyond Multiculturalism: Empowering Latino Students and the Community鈥 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 7 in the Large Auditorium on the Marple Campus (901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA, 19063). The conference is part of the College鈥檚 commitment to providing access and quality education to Latino students and will focus on issues of immigration, inclusion, equality and the plight of undocumented DREAMers in higher education.
Dr. Javier 脕vila, the 2016 Hispanic Leader of the Year Award Winner, will serve as keynote speaker for the conference.聽 脕vila began his teaching career at the University of Puerto Rico, and currently serves as a Professor of English at Northampton Community College, where his dedication to students earned him the 2015 Pennsylvania Professor of the Year Award. 脕vila is also a renowned novelist and poet. His best-selling novel Different was turned into the award-winning film Miente, and his poetry collection The Symmetry of Time received an award from the Pen Club and The Dead Man鈥檚 Position earned an award from The Puerto Rico Institute of Culture. 聽His latest endeavor鈥 The Trouble with My Name鈥is a one-man show that blends his talents as a poet and professor into a hilarious and poignant performance.
The conference includes panels on 鈥淧aredes y Puentes: Undocumented Dreamers in Higher Education,鈥 鈥淒reamers in College: (Im)Migration and Successful Institutional Policies,鈥 and 鈥淟atino Student Perspectives and the College Experience鈥.
Sponsored by the College鈥檚 faculty-led Latino Initiatives and Outreach Network in collaboration with the student-led Latin Flavor Club, the conference is free and open to the public.
