Renovated Tennis Courts Enhance Campus, Invite Local Competitors
MEDIA, PA, September 22, 2010 - The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund awarded ´ó·¢ÁùºÏ²Ê a $40,000 grant for restoration of the tennis courts at the Marple Campus, announced College President Dr. Jerome S. Parker. The repair and resurfacing of the six tennis courts took place in spring, and the courts have now reopened. In addition to the College’s co-ed tennis team, various individuals, USTA teams and community groups use the Media Line Road courts on a regular basis.
Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith was a prominent member of Philadelphia society. Her love of tennis led to her establishing the United States Lawn Tennis Association Girls
The investment of the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund in our courts is greatly appreciated," said Parker, who has recently spearheaded construction of two new academic facilities on the Marple Campus. "The opportunity to restore our tennis courts had not been a priority because of our focus on the new academic facilities. Thanks to the foundation’s interest, we were able to enhance an athletic program that provides competition and recreation for the College community and beyond," said Parker. Parker added that the improvements to the courts offer more opportunities to community members, local tournaments, and intercollegiate competition.’ Sportsmanship Trophy and the Middle States Lawn Tennis Association Tournament. The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund, formed in 1977 from her estate and managed by Wells Fargo Bank, benefits organizations located in Southeastern Pennsylvania, with primary emphasis on serving community needs in Delaware County.
