Mehdi Ali Khan, Studio Art
Artist Statement
The art that I make is a hybrid between digital and traditional art, incorporating elements of both. The pieces are moderately sized, neither very big nor very small. They depict semi-surreal representations of a variety of subjects, from figures to landscapes, inspired by films such as Tron and Bladerunner. My pieces are murky and gestural, with thick layers of paint and rippling texture. My art conveys the combination of the natural and familiar parts of our world combined with the unnatural, mechanical, and disturbing aspects of science fiction and technology in order to give the viewer vertigo and make them question their understanding of how technological advances guide our world and culture. The pieces are intrinsically connected to John Harris and the matte paintings of old science fiction.
