Early Childhood Education
TheÌýNational Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditedÌýEarly Childhood EducationÌýassociateÌýdegree develops theÌýknowledge, skills, and abilitiesÌýof students interested in teaching or working in related careers with children fromÌýbirth throughÌýtheÌýfourth grade. TheÌýEarly Childhood Education course of studyÌýprovides aÌýstrongÌýtheoretical foundation inÌýtheÌýprinciples of child growth and development,Ìýfrom the prenatal through primary years. The degree is designed to create competent and capable educators who provide and support each child in reaching theirÌýpotential. StudentsÌýwill gain skills that focus onÌýage appropriateÌýchild observation, curriculum planning, advocacy,Ìýengaging families and working with diverse learners. Students will studyÌýteaching strategies that improveÌýlearning,Ìýinterpersonal, and communication skills.Ìý
Upon completion of the course of study,Ìýstudents receive an Associate in Arts degree and may either enter the workforce or transfer to a baccalaureate program that leads to Pre-k to 4th grade teacher certification. Because the course of studyÌýsupports the needs of those wishing to pursue a variety of options including transfer, it is highly recommendedÌýthat students consult their advisors and transfer agreementsÌýavailableÌýthrough the ´ó·¢ÁùºÏ²Ê portal.Ìý
Graduates of the course of studyÌýwill be prepared toÌýwork as childcareÌýteachers,Ìýdirectors, parent educators, children's recreation staff, teacher assistants,Ìýand instructional aides. Graduates who wish to pursue aÌýPennsylvania’s Pre-k to 4thÌýGrade teacherÌýcertificate will need to transfer toÌýcomplete a Pennsylvania Department of Education-approved teacher certification program at aÌýfour-yearÌýcollege or university.Ìý´ó·¢ÁùºÏ²Ê has many Program-to-Program articulation agreements thatÌýallowÌýour graduates to enter the four-year university as juniors.Ìý
The ECE program is also proud to partner with Philadelphia'sÌýFirst Up Early Childhood organization, which creates the Learn & Earn opportunity by which the College's students are matched with employers and earn credits while gaining work experience. This is a grant-funded, non-registered apprenticeship program with a variety of options and high retention rate!Ìý
